Greetings
Thank you for taking the time to visit this webpage. My name is Jay Aguas and I am a juvenile
Justice and Motivational Interviewing consultant and trainer. I currently reside in Sacramento,
California. Since the beginning of my career, I have sought opportunities to enhance my skills in
a variety of capacities. I have been an agency personnel director and represented the Governors
office in collective bargaining negotiations with state employees. My real passion resides in the
area of training and criminal justice. I have held increasing responsible positions in the juvenile
justice area including serving as the Superintendent (warden) of a juvenile facility with 530
youthful offenders and 486 staff. I left this position to become the Deputy Director of Juvenile
Facilities with oversight of 8 juvenile facilities and 2 fire camps under my direct responsibility.
After retiring in December of 2007, I have continued to provide technical and consultative services
in the juvenile justice area with an emphasis on reform programs and court compliance.
Throughout my career, I have always sought and was selected to provide a wide variety of in-service
training courses. After a 31 year absence from a formal education program, I returned to school and
earned my Master's Degree in Criminal Justice in December of 2005. My thesis was "Is social learning
the root cause of juvenile gang behavior" which included 350 subjects in the study. Currently,
I teach Juvenile Delinquency prevention at the local Junior College and Gang's and Gang Behavior at
the University Level.
Along my life path, I was exposed to a new type of individual counseling style called "Motivational
Interviewing" in February of 2007. I felt the process had enormous positive use in the criminal
justice area especially in probation and institutional settings. Over the next 24 months, I engulfed
myself in gaining a high level of knowledge and practice with this methodology. I was very fortunate
to be selected to travel to Stiges, Spain to be trained as part of the Motivational Interviewing
Network of Trainers (MINT) program. Since that date, I have been actively involved in developing
and providing MI training for a number of jurisdictions. I am also on staff with UC Davis extension
program for MI services.
I believe that I have a wealth of knowledge and experiences to help organizations meet desired
performance outcomes. I will never accept an assignment where I can not contribute to the
betterment of the organization. I am always available to discuss potential projects and ideas,
so please feel free to contact me at your convenience.
